The Republic of Türkiye has officially launched the first phase of constructing a spaceport in Somalia after completing feasibility and design studies, according to the Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır.
The project is being developed in the coastal town of Warsheekh on land allocated under a bilateral agreement between Somalia and Türkiye. Officials say Somalia’s proximity to the equator played a key role in its selection, as it allows for more efficient space launches and reduced fuel consumption.
The spaceport forms part of Türkiye’s national space program and is expected to support future satellite launch capabilities, marking a major step in the country’s ambitions in space technology.
According to Somali Eye, Somali authorities have recently increased security around the construction site, deploying Turkish-trained forces including the Gorgor Brigade, along with coastal security units. Additional protective systems have also been put in place to secure the sensitive project.
In parallel, the Turkish ambassador in Mogadishu has held discussions with Maxamed Axmed Gacal, the district commissioner of Warsheekh, focusing on strengthening coordination and cooperation between local authorities and security forces tasked with protecting the site.
The development of the spaceport highlights deepening strategic ties between Somalia and Türkiye and could position Somalia as an important location for future space launch operations.
